Please note: The accessibility guide below refers to the SpeakIT Plus service.

You can use the speaker iconinthe navigation bar at the top of the screen to have any page read by SpeakIT.

  1. If you only want to hear a list of links on the page click the Read Link icon.
  2. If you only want to listen to a certain section you can hover the cursor over the text and click on the speech bubble.
  3. Select the text you want to listen to using the mouse and then click on the Read Text icon.
  4. The service will automatically read link which have the focus. Usually the focus is changed by pressing the TAB key.

 

A short description of the icons in the toolbar is provided below:

Play Bubble Button

Reads the section over which the mouse pointer is placed or highlighted.

Alt - X

Stop Button

 Stops the current speech.

Alt - Z

Save Button

Saves the current speech to a file.

Alt - Y

Magnify Button

Downloads and runs Lightning Magnifier. Lightning is a magnification software program for the modern PC, working on Windows XP and Windows Vista. Whatever appears on the computer screen can be magnified up to 6 times. With Lightning you can magnify the entire screen or an area you choose, with a magnification strip or lens.
To stop the Magnifier just press Pause on the keyboard.

Alt - M

ClaroView Button

Downloads and runs ClaroView. ClaroView is an innovative and easy to use piece of software which provides a tinted overlay to make browsing and reading on-screen easier. You can change the colour of the screen tint and you can vary the level of tint.

Alt - C

ScreenRuler Button

Downloads and runs ScreenRuler, a strip magnifier which allows part of the PC screen to be highlighted and magnified in a horizontal band.

Alt - R

Settings Button

Shows the settings page.

Alt - P

Help Button

Shows the help page.

Alt-Shift-?

Link Button

Reads all the links on the page.   

Alt - L

Go To Link Button Goes to the chosen link.   

Alt - O

Exit Button

Exits the service.

Alt - Q

 

Access Keys

 

Access Keys are keyboard shortcuts that allow you to navigate around a website without the need for a mouse or other pointing device.

Access Keys for this website are listed below:

0 - Access Key details.
1 - Home Page.
5 - Feedback Form (Contact).

The way in which you use Access Keys will depend on the Internet browser you are using. Below are a list of common Internet browsers and how the Access Key can be used in those Internet browsers.

Internet Explorer 5+ (PC)
Hold down the ALT Key.
Press the number or letter of the Access Key.
Release both keys then press ENTER.

Internet Explorer 5+ (Mac)
Hold down the CTRL Key.
Press the number or letter of the Access Key.

Netscape 6 and earlier (PC and Mac)
Not supported.

Netscape 7 (PC)
Hold down the ALT Key.
Press the number or letter of the Access Key.

Mozilla (PC)
Hold down the ALT Key.
Press the number or letter of the Access Key.

Mozilla (Mac)
Hold down the CTRL Key.
Press the number or letter of the Access Key.

Safari (Mac)
Hold down the CTRL Key.
Press the number or letter of the Access Key.
